{"id":1041,"date":"2022-04-06T15:27:47","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T15:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.atlanticwave-sdx.net\/?p=1041"},"modified":"2022-04-06T16:06:18","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T16:06:18","slug":"innovating-the-network-for-data-intensive-science-indis-at-sc17-2-3-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atlanticwave-sdx.net\/?p=1041","title":{"rendered":"Bridging Europe, Africa and the Americas (BEAA) \u2013 New Collaboration for shared transoceanic R&#038;E networking resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seven leading regional and national Research and Education networks and organisations across multiple continents announced the establishment of the&nbsp;<strong>\u201cBridging Europe, Africa and the Americas\u201d (BEAA) Collaboration<\/strong>, aiming to increase the resilience of their networks across a set of transoceanic links that interconnect their communities in Eastern and Southern Africa, Europe and Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BEAA Collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlight.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amlight<\/a>\/the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bot.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Florida International University Board of Trustees<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/geant.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G\u00c9ANT<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/redclara.net\/index.php\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RedCLARA<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnp.br\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RNP<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csir.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenet.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TENET<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ubuntunet.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UbuntuNet Alliance<\/a>. All partners agreed to collaborate for an initial period of three years, by providing mutual back-up through high-capacity links and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back-up connectivity enabled by the agreement will ensure that advanced Research and Education collaborations among the regions will continue even in case of service outages. Participating organisations will use the capacity provided by the agreed back-up arrangements to carry high volumes of data required for data-intensive research, including \u2013 notably \u2013 Earth Observation (EO) data of the European Union\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.copernicus.eu\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copernicus programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening a new chapter in the R&amp;E collaboration between Europe, Africa and the Americas, the BEAA agreement showcases an increasingly resilient, flexible and interconnected global R&amp;E networking ecosystem, apt to support scientists worldwide in tackling the big scientific challenges of our times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThe collaborative efforts by the Research and Education (R&amp;E) Networks to increase connectivity and capacity in the South Atlantic has been transformational. The BEAA collaboration will leverage this outcome to increase network resilience in support of the global R&amp;E communities.\u201d, said&nbsp;<strong>Julio Ibarra, Principal Investigator, AmLight.<\/strong><\/p><p>\u201cG\u00c9ANT is pleased to reinforce the longstanding collaboration between the Research and Education Networks in Europe, Africa and the Americas by joining the BEAA collaboration. Seven organizations participate in the agreement and, through it, they will establish routes of support for the already existing connectivity between them.
